perspective

view of things, position the narrator takes

theme

topic or subject, big idea

identify

to pick out or recognize

summarize

give only the main parts

infer

to guess based on clues and prior knowledge

figurative language

a way to say a lot in few words

simile

a comparison using the words like or as

metaphor

a direct comparison

personification

giving inanimate objects human characteristics

character

an imaginary person represented in a work of fiction (play or film or story)

setting

to say what will happen before it occurs

1st person point of view

The narrator is a character in the story. ( I, me, my, we, our )

3rd person omniscient point of view

The narrator is considered to be “all knowing” and can see/hear everything in the story and can tell the reader what each characters are thinking and feeling

author’s purpose

The reason the author has for writing. ( Inform, persuade, express, & entertain)

root

the main part of a word that gives the word its basic meaning

context clues

information from the reading that helps the reader to identify the meaning of an unknown word

fact

a statement that can be PROVEN

opinion

a statement that expresses a person’s judgment or belief

fiction

a literary work that is made up; created in someone’s mind; not based entirely on truth

nonfiction

Writing that is factual, not creative or fictional.

poetry

A kind of rhythmic, compressed language that uses figures of speech and imagery designed to appeal to our emotions and imagination.

rhyme

repetition of sounds at the end of words

prefix

a syllable or word that comes before a root word to change its meaning

suffix

follows a word root to change its meaning or part of speech

conflict

opposition in a work of drama or fiction between characters or forces (especially an opposition that motivates the development of the plot)

stanza

a group of lines in a poem or song that constitute a division (in prose: paragraph)
